Project Mercury (1958-1963)

Project Mercury was the first USA manned spaceflight program.

Its major objectives were:

*To orbit a manned spacecraft around Earth;

*To investigate man's ability to function in space;

*To recover both man and spacecraft safely.

The American Mercury program had its first orbital success in Feb., 1962, when John Glenn circled the earth three times.

Project Mercury was American's first "small steps" toward that "Giant Leap for mankind."
